What is a Cataract?

A cataract is the clouding of the eye’s natural lens, which is normally transparent and responsible for focusing light onto the retina. This clouding results in blurred or foggy vision, making everyday tasks like reading, driving at night, or recognizing faces difficult.

Cataracts typically develop slowly and may not interfere with vision in the early stages. However, as they progress, they can cause significant visual impairment and require surgical treatment. Cataract surgery is one of the safest and most effective procedures worldwide, and with advanced laser technology, results are more accurate than ever before.

Symptoms of Cataracts

You may have cataracts if you experience:

  • Blurred, cloudy, or dim vision

  • Difficulty seeing at night

  • Sensitivity to bright light and glare

  • Needing brighter light for reading

  • Seeing halos around lights

  • Frequent changes in eyeglass prescriptions

  • Fading or yellowing of colors

  • Double vision in one eye

In the beginning, cataracts may only affect a small portion of the lens, and vision loss may not be noticeable. As cataracts grow, they affect more of the lens and distort the light entering the eye, making symptoms worse.

When Should You See a Doctor?

Book an appointment with an eye specialist if you experience:

  • Noticeable changes in vision

  • Double vision or flashes of light

  • Severe eye pain or headaches

Early diagnosis is key to preserving vision and planning effective treatment.

Causes of Cataracts

Cataracts usually occur due to aging or injury that alters the eye lens tissue. Other causes include:

  • Genetic conditions

  • Past eye surgeries or injuries

  • Long-term use of steroid medications

  • Medical conditions such as diabetes

  • Excessive exposure to UV sunlight

With age, the lens becomes thicker, less flexible, and less transparent. Proteins in the lens break down and clump together, creating cloudiness that worsens over time.

Types of Cataracts

  • Nuclear Cataracts – Affect the center of the lens, often causing yellowing and blurred distance vision.

  • Cortical Cataracts – Wedge-shaped opacities around the lens edges that gradually spread inward.

  • Posterior Subcapsular Cataracts – Form at the back of the lens, causing glare and halos, often progressing quickly.

  • Congenital Cataracts – Present from birth or childhood, usually due to genetics or infection during pregnancy.

Risk Factors

You may be at higher risk if you have:

  • Increasing age

  • Diabetes

  • Excessive UV sunlight exposure

  • Smoking or heavy alcohol use

  • High blood pressure or obesity

  • History of eye injuries, inflammation, or surgery

  • Long-term use of corticosteroids

Prevention

Although cataracts cannot always be prevented, you can reduce risks by:

  • Regular eye examinations

  • Quitting smoking

  • Managing diabetes and other medical conditions

  • Eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables (antioxidants)

  • Wearing sunglasses that block UV rays

  • Reducing alcohol intake
